How Much is Two Billion?

Numbers comparison - the size of one billion dollars

In mid-2013, #DadChat surpassed one billion impressions. I wrote How Much is One Billion at the time so all the amazing facts about numbers are in that column. This time, I simply want to crow a bit about how the entire year turned out for #DadChat AND, what I believe to be the potential and pitfalls for Tweet Chats in the future.

First, the statistics for 2013:

Contributors: 7,956
Tweets: 77,113

No Smart-Phone, No Worry

Cell-Phone graphic

I’ve been mostly without the use of my iPhone for going on a full week because of traveling overseas. The cost of all the international plans were really silly prohibitive and I thought – what the heck – I can do without, except for emergencies. So, I got a plan that basically costs about 80 cents per minute, bought 200 minutes, and turned off all data use. If my boys need to reach me, they can. Everyone else will get my voice message saying that I’m gone because this particular international phone plan gave me a new sim card and a new number to use while I’m gone and the only people I gave this new number to were my boys.

Basic Social Media Etiquette, Part I

Cartoon about Good Manners

Yes, Hank Ketcham was thinking of me!

There are many columns about Netiquette as it’s been termed by some – or proper etiquette on Social Media. I have my own thinking and thoughts on this that I’d like to share. It’s less only etiquette than ways to make things easier for all and, in some cases, just thoughts on how to make things better for all.

Celebrity Experts

Celebrity experts in Social Media and Politics

I was speaking with a Social Media friend about so-called celebrity experts in the SoMe world. We quickly distinguished between the real knowledgeable person who actually did their own tweets and others that sort of fell into fame for no apparent reason. This topic even came up in a recent #blogchat where someone was negatively talking about a SoMe celebrity who had tens of thousands of followers on Twitter, but followed only a handful himself.

Kickstarter Gives

Kickstarter CampaignKickstarter is a way that we can all participate in great Social Media projects or, for that matter, any worthwhile project. We have just launched our Kickstarter campaign to fund a coffee-table commemorative book featuring the history of our Because I Said So comic strip, the first 100 strips, and much more. My intention is to give 10% of any earnings to charity since I sincerely believe in Social Media = Social Good. I hope you’ll help support and promote our project. Check out all the cool reward levels – truly something for everyone! At the very least, enjoy the video!

Are We too Naked?

Embarrassment Photo

Look at this closely and you’ll see “it”

Everyone is exposing themselves these days, if not literally then at least figuratively. Discretion in the public sphere is gone. Shame hardly exists when we see figures like Anthony Weiner and Elliot Spitzer right back in the run for public office. Our once trusted and venerable journalists (think Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite) are now mostly pundits and propaganda mongers. Truth takes a back seat to agendas. And, with celebrities, the lack of decorum literally knows no bounds.
