Revisiting Gratitude

Nearly seven years ago, I fell asleep at the wheel of my truck. The resulting accident – with the cruise control set at 72 mph – should have killed me, or worse. I walked away with nary a meaningful scratch as did my dog, who was thrown from the vehicle when we veered off the highway. As I drive that same route regularly, a recent visit to the crash site made me reflect on how lucky I was then and how lucky I am now.

#Grammys, Life Lessons from Charlotte

Boy, did I love the #Grammys. It was truly a SHOW! Fun and a bit sad remembering all those who died, especially Whitney Houston. She’s on my 12Most list of Classic Romantic Songs which was published just days before she died. The #Grammys are always fun, though.

We have a new look to the site and I hope you like it, especially the wild color scheme. Green to me = money, the color of my eyes, and the environment. Nice associations.

My current column is about my wife’s dog, Life Lessons From Charlotte. Much to learn from her. I hope you’ll explore the site as there’s so much here to see, read, and listen to!

The Middle School Syndrome

My “A Dad’s Point-of-View” column is carried all over the world and one of the wonderful peripheral benefits I receive is “virtually” meeting so many wonderful editors, publishers, and web-masters.  One of them is Jennifer Jurgens, the news director/executive assistant, at wyomingnetwork.com. They have 17 community websites across Wyoming. She is also a wonderful and involved mom.  Recently, she wrote to me asking some questions that related to her daughter beginning middle school.  Well, to be more accurate, she was suggesting that these questions (a.k.a. issues) could be the basis for one of my columns.

Unlike the “Empty Nest Syndrome,” that is well known, documented, and ubiquitously written about, the “Middle School Syndrome” is my term for what I believe is a newer “syndrome.”  This column will bring this reality out from the shadows where it has lurked!  To be clear, the term “Middle School Syndrome” is mine and it is based on my experiences and those of parents that I know.  I suspect it is widespread, but I’m sure it is not present in every community and every school district.

R E S P E C T — Find Out What It Means to Me

Respect.  Isn’t that really all parents want from their kids?  Isn’t it about the hardest thing to actually teach them to do–treat us with respect?  I struggle with this a great deal due to the way my two teenage boys sometimes speak to me, respond to a request, and generally behave.  It is not with much respect, at times, and I don’t like it.

Aretha had the biggest hit with her rendition of “Respect” though it was originally performed by Otis Redding in 1965 (here’s a link to a great video of her performing it in 1968).  Some of the lyrics to that classic song resonant for me on this topic: “All I’m askin’ for is a little respect,” and “R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to me.”
