Adopt or Buy (a Pet)?

Dogs and Cats

This week’s Moral Question of the Week is simple: should you adopt or buy a dog/cat/pet? I will prejudice the question with my point-of-view that there are FAR too many dogs and cats in shelters and FAR too many dogs and cats that are killed each year for anyone to go out and buy a “special” kind of dog or cat? What do you think? Comment below…

Our new pups - adopted from a rescue mom so we don't know their exact breed but WHO CARES!

I think breeding should be illegal. There are way too many unwanted furchildren in the shelters that people could rescue/adopt rather than going for that purebred and paying oodles of dollars. Adopt don’t Shop!

@JustBrenLee:disqus – I appreciate your passion but I would prefer WE as people just do the right thing. When the government gets involved, it almost always gets out of hand. I feel much the same about kids – so many need homes yet so many couples have SUCH an ego about having their “own” child!

A puppy or a kitten is overpriced if it is anything but free regardless of where you find it, and they are priceless. Mature pets are always free, found only in pounds and shelters. They too may be a treasure unless they are feral, then they are a woe beyond price.

Of course, I’m only speaking in terms of their price upon acquisition. Beyond that, they can turn expensive. Believe me. I’ve own two diabetic cats…

There is nothing sweeter than saving a dog or cat from certain death at a shelter/pound – as usual @jack43:disqus, we agree!

Adopting our cats was one of the best decisions we ever made! Even if someone really wants a specific breed of cat or dog, there are also a lot of purebred or part-breed animals in shelters or the care of rescue groups.

@disqus_ZqoTzZvLNT:disqus – heck there are rescue groups for just about EVERY breed! Not adopting is purely selfish IMO…

I’m not a pet fancier, but if I were, I like to think I would adopt a pet from a pound or shelter.

No surprise there @disqus_dU5ulU60s7:disqus – I know your values and would be surprised if you thought otherwise!
