RE: Boy Scout policy. No, it hasn’t worked “so darn well for more than a hundred years”. By focusing on homosexuality, they have missed the opportunity to prevent pedophiles from infiltrating their ranks. Case study: I have witnessed many occasions when the Boy Scouts have treated cases of child abuse in the same manner as the Catholic Church. They swept them under the rug. Meanwhile, in San Diego, for example, they shut down one of the most successful Police Explorer programs in the nation when they learned that the founding leader was “gay”. There had never been any problems that would have inspired this response. In response, the City and Country of San Diego closed their doors to all scouting units.

A Gay Boy Scouting movement would be akin to the old system of “separate but equal” that permeated school systems prior to the Civil Rights Act. Why shouldn’t gay youngsters be integrated with straight ones? No one is recruiting.

The fact is that this issue became an issue when Boy Scouts were going bankrupt and purchased by a church organization. Prior to that time, Boy Scouting was a paramilitary organization, inspired by the experience of British serving officers who lamented how unprepared young men during the Boer War. Learning how to pitch a tent, build and maintain a fire, etc were the skills needed by soldiers in the field.

The goal of Boy Scouting today is not to fix the world. It is to evangelize.

There is so much more I could write. I was a Boy Scout, man and boy, for more than 25 years. I fought this issue many times. The local council officers would have loved nothing more than to get rid of me, but I had certain “political connections” that protected me.

BTW, the Girl Scouts do not discriminate against gays as do the Boy Scouts. Do men serve as Girl Scout leaders? I couldn’t say. I don’t have any experience with them, but I have seen fathers at the cookie tables…

I don’t believe they have “focused on homosexuality” at all Jack…not to discount your pov/experience at all @twitter-189186958:disqus. It’s the MSM that has brought the issue to the public’s view and now left-wing politics are seeking to boycott and legislate against them. It is NOT a simple issue. I don’t know about the Girl Scouts either, but I sure doubt they have male leaders of the girl groups!?

My own experience with Boy Scouts (cub scouts) was a nightmare. We had a parent who hid his criminal record of conviction of child pornography. It only came to light when I was stalked online by this individual (he had access to my email account) and when I did my own background check I discovered his court records. When I went to the leadership of the Boy Scouts I was told that I needed to leave….go to another Pack and be quiet. There is a history of the Boy Scouts keeping this kind of activity under the radar and more parents need to speak up. In the end, we left cub scouts completely. The bullying of the parents and the leadership led us to take our son out of it. After a year of leaving, we were asked to testify to the council when they finally decided to address the issue of the parent with the criminal record….a year after this man took pictures of all the boys and had access to their personal information….we went back and testified and the man was taken out of the pack, but it shouldn’t take a year. With regard to this issue, there is nothing wrong with being gay however, the scouts and the parents have to give parents a choice to have the knowledge of the pack leadership – and let parents decide if they want to participate with gay leaders. The scouts are an organization that stand up for God and Country – unfortunately, in my case and several others – it’s the parents at the lower levels who destroy this for all the boys.

VERY sad story, Jen…can’t believe they would do something so wrong! But, it’s a LARGE organization so any big thing will have its failings. There’s been much good that’s come from the BSA!
