Just A Guy Alone (on Christmas)

So, my first wedding anniversary is right after Christmas and my wife and I will be alone on separate continents. We didn’t plan it this way, but it turned out just as we planned.

We celebrate both Hannukah and Christmas, so at least we’ll have a couple of days of Hannukah before they leave. I’m quite conflicted doing both holidays, but I’ve had to let that one go–part of the compromises of marriage and a strong-willed, stubborn wife.  Or course, I’m not the least bit stubborn. read more

I’ll (Not) Be Home For Christmas

This holiday season my wife and I will not both be home for Christmas. Instead we will celebrate our first year of marriage on separate continents.  As we are different races and religions, there are usually challenges we encounter at this time of year, so maybe being 7,000 miles apart will make it easier. We’ve actually resolved the big conundrum for me–the Christmas tree.

I don’t care if you call it a Hannukah bush or an ordinary tree; it is a Christmas tree, pure and simple.  It represents the birth of Christ and it’s not just a secular symbol.  But, it matters to my wife, so we resolved the issue by agreeing, like so many mixed religious couples, to celebrate both Christmas and Hannukah.  Since my boys were raised Jewish, and my younger son just became a Bar Mitzvah, it really isn’t an issue for me anymore. read more

Just A Guy Who Is Very Grateful

(Note: I consider this an early Thanksgiving-themed blog – enjoy)

I attended the Bar Mitzvah of a friend’s son recently.  This young man has some relatively severe learning disabilities.  Yet, his parents provided him with the sort of support that was full of love and understanding for him.  The rabbi adjusted the service to allow him full participation, within his limits, and it was as loving a right-of-passage as possible, with an equally classy and terrific party afterward.

Even the weather cooperated, as their theme was a rainbow and at just the right moment, with all of the guests gathered outside, the rabbi asked us to turn around. We saw the setting sun actually make e a slight rainbow, as if Industrial Light & Magic were hired to create it. read more

My Son Has The Swine Flu – A Daily Journal

NOTE:  I am not a doctor and this column is not intended to be giving medical advice.  It is about my experience with my son and the swine flu, and my belief that the media may have exaggerated and scared the public about its risks. Regardless, you should take every precaution, consult your doctor if there are any symptoms, and to secure proper information, go to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) web-sites – http://cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm.

We just learned that our older son, Will, has the swine flu.  Fortunately, we didn’t panic or allow the hysteria of the msm (mainstream media) to scare us to death.  His first reaction was simply, “Darn, I’m going to miss Halloween.” I believe our media have become hysteria mongers, as well as all too often focusing on their agenda vs. objective reporting.  They devote way too much time to subjects unworthy of so much coverage such as the balloon boy or the tragic deaths of celebrities. read more

In Sickness and in Health

Dealing with each other, in sickness and in health… My wife had a medical emergency early one recent morning.  The details are unimportant, but the care and response that we received were very important.  At five a.m., she called her doctor and got him on the phone.  He said we should call 911, which we did.  Within a few minutes both a paramedic vehicle and a fire truck arrived at our door. Moments later, she was getting attended to by three men in uniforms while I sat nearby feeling useless.

It was quickly determined by their efforts and in conference with the doctor that she was well enough for me to drive her to the hospital.  So, less than 30 minutes after this began we were on the road.  As it was so early, the drive was traffic-free and we entered the Emergency Room as the sun was rising.  Thankfully, it was a quiet morning there so we were quickly ushered into “Triage” and then given a bed.  In no time, a nurse had begun an IV and shortly afterward, the doctor on call did an exam.  He had already spoken with my wife’s primary doctor. read more

Just A Guy Feeling Left Out

My son is almost 16 and he now has a girlfriend.  Evidently it’s “official” as both have declared they’re “in a relationship” on their Facebook pages.  Everyone in my family, my wife and younger son, says it’s none of my business.  I can’t help it; I’m feeling left out and curious.  Is this so wrong?  I also want to be sure he’s handling “things” appropriately.

He has gone from being the quintessential guy’s guy, only hanging out with his male buddies, to having a posse of female friends, one “special” one now, and his male friends seem to have bit the dust, except for his band-mates. read more

Best Friend or Best Parent?

We just returned from a boys trip to Vegas.  By “boys,” I mean my two boys, who are almost 16 and 13 and me, the oldest of the “boys” (according to my wife).  I had to consider, yet again, the dilemma we confront as parents today, with the constant assault on our values and the non-stop sexual and violent imagery our kids face.  We can’t fully shelter our kids, but what should be the limits? read more

Summer Vacations Are for Parents, Too

Remembering Chevy Chase in those summer vacations movies reminds me of the fact that most so-called “family vacations” are, at best, vacations for the kids and torture for the parents. I’m generalizing, of course, but most generalizations as well as clichés, have a strong basis in truth. I stand by the proposition that we parents usually need a vacation after our family one, if only to recover and rest.

This summer my younger son, David, got to spend several weeks at the sleep- away camp he loves, while my older son, Will, is indulging his passion for rock ‘n’ roll at a Rock School where he’s taking drum lessons, and participating in numerous bands and concerts through the school.  He’ll also be living, figuratively, in our garage with his own band, driving the nearby horses crazy, or am I mistaking their thrashing about as dancing? read more
