Seven Days Without My iPhone

No photo-editing. This image was real! The pilot playing after dropping us off.

Note: This column was written while on vacation – heli-skiing – during the first week of April, 2012. And, in fact it was nine days…

I have just embarked on a heli-skiing trip to the Cariboo Mountains. I chose NOT to bring my iPhone. First, I had thought there was no reception at the lodge. Second, every time I go to Canada I incur stupid charges that piss me off. And, third, I thought it would be a great experiment to go without it.

How to Ski Out of This World

From across the valley, see where we skied...note the tiny ski tracks on the left AND the old avalanche tracks on the right! Click on the photo to see it larger.

Our last day of our heli-ski trip in British Columbia – in the Cariboo Mountain Range – was probably the best day of skiing in my life. We skied 30,120 vertical feet, which is slightly more than the 29,029 height of Mt. Everest. This was a trip with CMH (Canadian Mountain Holidays) and there were 45 guests for our week, from Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Austria, Brazil, Spain, and a few of us from the States.

Please note: Final and FULL videos of our experience are now included at the bottom of this post!

Am I Crazy to go Heli-Skiing with Avalanche Warnings

Our tracks up high above tree-line in The Adamants

Okay, the answer to the title question lies above. THAT is the beauty of what we see when we go heli-skiing. More people die from lightning and far more from car crashes than die in avalanches. I say GO FOT IT. We are renting those new avi-parachutes that release IF you get in an avalanche and help keep you above the snow. They’ve saved two lives this season already if you’ve seen the news.

I Love to Ski

I’ve  been a ski lover for years. During my first marriage I hardly got to ski at all. My first wife wasn’t interested NOR were my boys. We tried, but they didn’t take to it and if there’s one thing I’ve learned from being a dad it’s that you can’t nor shouldn’t push your kids to do what you like vs. what they like. You can introduce them to your passions, but they get to make the choice – or you’ll suffer in the end!

When my marriage ended, I vowed I’d never give up skiing again. My boys were now older and I was able to get baby-sitters for my ski trips. When I was blessed to meet my second wife, it turned out she was a better skier than me. We’ve enjoyed skiing together ever since.

In fact, we are going on our second heli-skiing trip next month…below is my favorite photo from our last one to The Adamants in British Columbia.

What a view - Look at our ski tracks in the distance

Memorial Day — One Year Later: My Story

Memorial Day–One Year Later, by Bruce Sallan

For me, this Memorial Day, I have an anniversary. One for which I shudder a bit in memory and also feel extremely grateful. That is what Memorial Day is actually all about –gratitude for the men and women that have served our country in the armed forces, sacrificed their lives or their physical well-being, in support of making the world safer.

In recognition of those men and women, I first share with you this short video of VJ Day in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 14, 1945, less than 6 years after Pearl Harbor, the day that “will live in infamy,” according to our then President, FDR.
