The other day I had a sobering conversation with a 21-year-old woman. We covered a lot of topics, and when I got to my inevitable probing questions about her personal life and asked if she ever wanted to get married, her answer was a quick and resounding, “No.” The ensuing short exchange sealed the deal for me of how far we’ve come – as far as societal values – in just my own lifetime!
Who doesn’t have that horrid memory of high school or middle school when you were snubbed, ignored, or made fun of? Today, popularity is public. How many friends do you have on Facebook? How many views did your Vine or Instagram or YouTube post get? Our kids use #SocialMedia in ways that are good AND hurtful to themselves and others. And, it’s there forever. Sometimes life has its scary moments (when you travel). This happened off the coast of South Africa.
Listening to the travails of two of our single women friends has motivated me to write this column and ask some questions, ponder some societal changes, and simply vent a bit.
